System Status
If you can't access a Chico resource you can check the status at:
http://www.csuchico.edu/usrv/ See
the box in the upper right.
The campus maintains two separate systems that are combined (as of S 2007): The Chico domain login and
password are used to access your desktop computer, bay, print services, and
email. The portal is a separate login and is used to access the Portal,
WebCT, and the VPN. The Password Station (http://password.csuchico.edu/)
is used to maintain your password for both of these systems.
Note: PeopleSoft and IFAS (Foundation) are still separate logins.
User Services provides support at no charge for state owned computers and
computers purchased with federal grant dollars. Computers purchased with
non-federal grants are not supported (for free). Support is limited to
specific computers models and software. See :
https://wiki.csuchico.edu/confluence/display/usrvkb/Supported+Software
The CSU has a site license for:
- MS Office products (including FrontPage & Publisher) and these can be
loaded on your desktop computer by User Services. Note User Service
does not support all office products (like Front Page) and you will need to
request that they be loaded.
- The campus also has a license for McAffee Anti-virus software and User
Services should load this automatically.
- SPSS is also available at no charge.
- CSU also has site licenses for ArcView, contact the Geographic
Information Center (GIC).
Some products like Adobe Acrobat and Dreamweaver (supported by User
Services) are available at discounted prices at the bookstore. See additional
information at:
http://www.csuchico.edu/usrv/software/PurchasingAgreements.shtml
Work at Home (WOH) Software
Some Microsoft product are licensed for Faculty to load on their home
computers and can be purchased for the cost of reproduction from the AS
Bookstore. See the following references: See:
http://www.csuchico.edu/usrv/software/mslicensing.shtml
Loading your own software
By default you are not made administrator of your desktop computer which is
required to load software. User Services can make you administrator of
your computer over the phone.
Avoid the Portal and use the direct login:
http://vista.csuchico.edu You
can save this as a shortcut on your desktop or as a favorite.
Technology & Learning Program (TLP)
WebCT support for both the technology and pedagogy. See:
http://www.csuchico.edu/tlp/ The
have a lab in the library basement staffed with helpful folks to solve your
Vista issues. Their web site has useful tips and tutorials.
WebDAV
WebDAV is a method of connecting to the Vista server which allows you to
treat a course like a remote hard drive. The big benefit to this is
the ability to drag and drop files into a course (much quicker to update and
add files this way). In Vista choose the File Manager option on the
course menu (Build Tab). Drop down the menu next to "File Manager".
Choose "Open as Web Folder" to open the course folder. The option
"View WebDAV info" will give you the network address to set the folder up as
a network drive in Windows Explorer.
Vista Support
A number of support documents are available at:
Sending Email to Students in a Class
A well kept secret is the group alias that is created for each course you
teach. This allows you to send out an email to the students wildcat
account. Address your email to:
SECTION_dept_course_section@section.csuchico.edu See:
http://www.csuchico.edu/usrv/email/classlist.shtml for more
information. NOTE: Students not using their wildcat account should
forward wildcat email to the account that they check regularly.
ListServ
To request a listserv see:
http://www.csuchico.edu/computing/CAMPCOMP/listserv.html
Spam Filtering
The campus email system marks suspected spam and places it in a special
folder. A daily digest is mailed to each user daily. See:
http://www.csuchico.edu/usrv/email/spam/index.shtml for more information
on how this works.
Blocked Files
Many files are blocked by the spam filter. See:
http://www.csuchico.edu/usrv/email/blocked.shtml for a list.
Using Exchange Server
Exchange Server is the campus email system for faculty and staff. It
is accessed via Outlook and provides calendar and contact. If you keep
you calendar and contacts on Exchange they will be accessible to you via the
web based email client and other Exchange users can view your calendar to
check your availability.
Web Based Email Client
The campus supports a web based email client which is useful for checking
email from home or while traveling. See:
http://silk.csuchico.edu
Campus Announcements
The campus sends out daily announcements via email. Access on the
web at:
http://www.csuchico.edu/pa/campusannounce/
Faculty members can request an account and space on the Bay server from
User Services. The server is accessible from campus computers logged
into the Chico domain (eg. your desktop computer). Bay can also be
accessed from off campus using the VPN (see below). Bay is regularly
backed up and you can create set the permissions in your Bay directory to
allow others to share your files. Bay directories can be attached as a
drive letter (ex. F:) or added as a shortcut to your desktop or menu. To
place files on Bay simply drag and drop. Note: Bay can also be accesses
from smart classrooms if you login into the computer using your login (Chico
domain). Bay directories are setup as follows: \\bay\users\Y\youremail
where the directory is your email address and it is located under a directory
with first letter of your email address. You can browse to your
directory by simply typing \\bay into the address
space in explorer. Space on Bay is also allocated to the College.
The campus provides web site hosting on the campus UNIX web server.
Access is via FTP. Your web address will be
http://www.csuchico.edu/~youremail where youremail is your actual email
address. See:
http://www.csuchico.edu/web/resources/application/index.html
The campus has a support system for student computing. See:
http://www.csuchico.edu/stcp/
The campus provides regular classes on software and campus systems.
See: http://training.csuchico.edu/
Faculty with grants through the foundation can access their accounts in
near real time. See Sponsored Programs for CCD.Net access. The system is
accessed at: http://ruby.csuchico.edu
Also many forms are available online at:
http://www.csuchico.edu/resp.
HR forms are available from the Research
Foundation office at:
http://www.csuchico.edu/rfdn/
The Cisco VPN software will allow you to connect to the campus network from
off campus (ex. at home on a DSL connection) and use campus network resources
like Bay. Connecting via the VPN also allows library access without
logging in. See:
http://www.csuchico.edu/uss/vpn/
The campus maintains WiFi at selected locations.
Service is free, but requires a login. See:
http://www.csuchico.edu/cns/internet.html for coverage map
TLP maintains a real video server for video streaming (called mole). Contact TLP
for space on this server and help in preparing video for web delivery.
The College of Ag maintains their web site on the campus server using a
WCMS. Check with the office for the current coordinator. Some
ASP ASP pages are hosted off campus own web server. Contact the office staff to place information on the server. The
contains information about the faculty, staff, program, events, etc.
